In the late afternoon I was talking with Lilinoe on the phone when my younger sister called on the other line. Lilinoe returned to our conversation and said that my sister was delayed in traffic due to a woman jumping off of a bridge onto the highway. My heart began thumping because the State of Hawai’i was still recovering from another tragedy. Lilinoe already had the television tuned into the local news, but there was no mention of the situation and I wasn’t near a television or computer. So, I turned to the next best thing, Twitter!
I sent an SMS to Twitter to all people from Hawai’i inquiring about the situation at 5:06 p.m. and within a minute I received the following replies:


And so, Twitter, although difficult to explain to non-users,is a quick resource for times when you’re unable to log onto a computer or when the local media is delayed in reporting breaking news.
