Having two of my own to raise, and a large extended family of next generation little ones sprouting up, I’m always looking for family friendly activities to do, especially on the days when the weather doesn’t allow for a day at the beach to be an option. In 1998, the Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center opened its doors after a major renovation transforming an old incinerator into a 38,000 square foot technology rich, interactive playground.
Lilinoe was fortunate enough to chaperon Jayden’s Kamehameha Preschool class on their adventure to the different exhibits’ galleries. HCDC is three levels, and begins with “Tot Spot” for the 5 and under toddlers; moves to “Fantastic You” which features a look inside the wonders of the human body. One of the favorite exhibits of children of all ages “Your Town” which allows them to walk through the shoes of firemen, bus drivers and mechanics. Parents will also enjoy the “Hawaiian Rainbows” which is a walk through the history of Hawai’i and “Your Rainbow World” which takes you on a trip to the different cultures around the world.
The adventure doesn’t end when you exit the doors, the Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center’s website is a great resource for children friendly home activities, book recommendations, educational games and even recipes.
The price for the adventure costs about the same as a movie, but at least you’re guaranteed kid-friendly fun at the Hawai’i Children’s Discovery Center.
