Oh memories! Dating myself here, when I lived on O'ahu, the Zoo was still free! I loved going there with a picnic lunch. Got scoldings for playing in the sprinklers once. LOL! Not so bad if I was small but I was in college. I was just enjoying a quick cool off on a really beautiful, hot day. The "Zoo Man" and I both laughed it off.

They really worked hard on their exhibits. It was almost a completely different place when I took my kids about 10+ years ago. Got photos of the kids at my favorite lion shaped drinking fountain. Is it still there? I've got grandkids now.

Sorry for rambling on!

The Honolulu Zoo has gone through many changes since I was a kid, and most, if not all, for the better.

The 'Iolani Ohana, an organization of parents, alum and staff from 'Iolani School, held a community service cleanup of the zoo a few months ago. We did many things, including clearing overgrowth near habitats, cleaning up litter from around the perimeter of the property cleaning and painting parts of the zoo, including the Keiki Zoo, among other things.

The group I was with helped make hundreds of animal masks for the zoo's keiki education program, where kids come from different schools on excursions and they learn about the zoo. As a reward, the Ohana group got to spend the rest of the day (as long as they chose to stay) exploring the zoo, when we were done.

Parents and keiki alike learned much of the zoo and had a better appreciation for the zoo itself and what it takes to keep it open and running for all to enjoy.

As Kalei said, some say our zoo is "cheesy", but I, too, say otherwise.
