The Day the Wall Street Journal Called

NEENZ Hawaii WSJThe morning that the Wall Street Journal contacted me I had began my day three hours earlier than I normally would because I had committed my daylight hours to my family. We had a handful of minor errands to run, lunch somewhere casual but delicious, and Manuheali’i to buy a shirt for my basketball team picture with my talented friend Joe Philipson of Philipson Photography. As I’ve become accustomed to doing, I kept in touch of my daily whereabouts via Twitter and BrightKite, and since I upgraded my phone a few months ago I also checked my emails.

“I’m a reporter at the Wall Street Journal, working on a story on various services that aim to consolidate all of a user’s communication—social-networking messages, email, photos, etc.—in one place. I came across your post here (http://www.faleafine.com/?p=124) on Fuser, and I was hoping to talk to you about your use of the service. Can you drop me a note or give me a call and let me know if you have some time to talk in the next day or two?

Since I was on the road, I called and left a message, but to be honest I was a bit skeptical since it was absolutely random. As we were trying on outfits, my phone rang and to my amazement it was Vauhini Vara technology reporter for the Wall Street Journal.

The interview went well, and the article, Social Services was published in today’s edition of WSJ. I am humbled by the five lines and my quote and grateful to be a part of the Wall Street Journal archives.

    Jeff,

My little guy still runs ’round the house chanting, “Fuser, fuser, fuser” in his shirt! You at least have one user in about 10 years!

    Aloha,
    NEENZ.
