Back in the day my Aunty Ulu and Uncle Gary had an arsenal of board games that we’d play until our parents came to corral us home or someone cried. Trouble, and Mastermind were our favorites. We even dabbled in card games of local style gin rummy, steal pack and we could never get enough of the game speed. As we grew the living room wasn’t as spacious and we began participating in televised games like Wheel of Fortune, and a local bingo game hosted by Karen Keawehawai’i. (Does anyone else remember?)
I remember my parents and Uncle Woody having marathon long games of Scrabble that ended with each scoring ridiculously high points. They even dabbled in Rummikub at one time, it’s like the card game except with tiles. During humble times, we made our own Monopoly game out of strips of paper, cardboard, and anything small enough to be used as your “marker.” The game last an entire summer before falling to the bottom of the toy box.
Television offered some game shows that were right up my alley. MTV’s Remote Control and VH1′s Rock ‘n Roll Jeopardy are two of my favorites that have seen their pop culture days. These days, I wonder how I could get through questions on Jeopardy but struggle to be smarter than a 5th grader!
Trivia type games are still one of my favorite hobbies, unfortunately my schedule doesn’t allow for me to decipher puzzles or research questions as much as I would like too. If you do have the time and are up for a fun challenge, check out ScrivTriv. There’s even a Smack Talk forum, and talking smack is highly encouraged.
that is so funny! I loved remote control and still love Jeopardy. Was that bingo show the one that said B1, B one winnah! and B4 Before you call… make sure you check all the number on your card…? My grandpa Higa LOVED that show. ha! off to check out ScrivTriv!
@Joscie
Yes! You could get your colored bingo cards from KFC. And, “in Hana, on Maui at the Hasegawa General Store!”
Good memories.
