Hawai’i Geek Week: Social and New Media Workshops

Hawai’i Geek Week got off to a great start with Mactoberfest. I had the pleasure of sharing the mic and a stage with Lorelle VanFossen, Bob Lew and the hosts of Bytemarks Cafe; Burt Lum and Ryan Ozawa. The audience was very engaging moving the conversation from beginning a blog to finding the time and motivation to post and the responsibility of content. We discussed the disappearance of journalism and the emergence of citizen journalism. It all sounds so geeky and technical, but there were eruptions of laughter throughout the day. Team Alltop was in full force handing out goodies, live streaming, taking photos and videotaping the event. But, while all of that was great, my cousin Nicole won the grand prize — a gift certificate to Apple in the amount of a new iPhone, which made the day all the better.

Geek Week wouldn’t be true to its name if it didn’t involve workshops and there are two that I will be attending. The first is “Hands on Workshop with Lorelle VanFossen” – a must for anyone wanting to learn how to set-up a blog or discover tips on improving their WordPress powered sites. VanFossen’s workshop is part of the Hawai’i Macintosh and Apple Users Society’s (HMAUS) Web Weavers Workshops and will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2008 at the Manoa Innovation Center from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Registration is required.

The next day is the Social Media Club Workshop which will feature in depth training for businesses, non profits and organizations just getting started with social and new media. Trainers include Hawai’i new media expert and my friend, Roxanne Darling; Social Media Club founder Chris Heuer and President Kristie Wells; and leading blogger and consultant to non profits Beth Kanter whom is also featured on the Nonprofit page of Alltop. The Social Media Club Workshop is on Thursday, October 22, 2008 at the Hawai’i Prince Hotel from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Registration is required.

Let’s build our skill sets together and join me at these workshops.
