Summer Plans: Education, Travel, and Fun

Growing up, every summer I attended summer school. Well, not every year, there was that one year when I forgot to turn in the registration forms. But, let’s not go there. Hawaii Beaches: Ala Moana

I believe that the brain needs to be stimulated, and idle bodies and minds leads to mischief. I believe this because this is how I am, and I’m sure my Mom knew this which is why I was in summer school every year, except of course that one time.

These days, as parents, Lilinoe and I are afforded different programs to consider for our children during summer break. Summer school has become reserved for students that have failed during the regular school year, maybe I’m naive but I don’t recall that footnote on the registration forms in my days, at least not in Elementary and Middle school!

In no particular order, here are the programs our children will be participating in:

  1. Leahi Swim School
  2. Roy Sakuma Ukulele School
  3. Kamehameha School’s Hoolauna Program

Each program lasts through the duration of the summer and is only a few hours throughout the week. We don’t want to burn them out, but keep them busy and give them their individual time (away from us).

I haven’t been back to the Big Island since I moved home to Oahu in 2005, and am hoping that we can travel to the Kohala Coast during the 4th of July weekend for Honu Independence Day.

What are you summer plans?

  1. I love going to Kona for 4th of July! The parade and the fireworks, it’s all fun. It’s great that you send your kids to summer school and classes. My mom sent me to Camp Slogget in Kokee on Kauai every summer, I loved it so much! One summer she also sent me to Kamehameha Schools summer school– and yep, I was the only haole kid. I loved it! We even had a pidgin class! My cow no kaukau your cow’s kaukau. LOL. I think my mom sent me to summer camp and summer school as much for her as for me. :-)

I had to laugh when I read the part about not remembering that footnote. Too funny!

In Virginia, our three older children will go to an overnight faith based High Adventure camp for a week. The younger one will attend two full day music/drama camps. There will also be a week of horse camp and continued horse riding lessons, and maybe a few violin lessons as well.

The rest of the time will be spent at the pool, library and many prayers for patience!!!

Susie, the cow sentence is the Hawaii version of “how now brown cow” :)

Cheryl, please send some prayers of patience our way. I have committed to more family, unplugged time this summer. :)
